So why did we call it Mattoni?!
Mattoni is Italian for Bricks, and Peterborough has a rich history in brickmaking with Italians making a large part of the workforce.
The history of Italians making bricks in Peterborough is a significant chapter in the city’s industrial heritage. In the early 20th century, a wave of Italian immigrants arrived in Peterborough, drawn by the promise of work and a better life. Many found employment in the burgeoning brickmaking industry, which was thriving due to the city’s rich clay deposits.
